Things are heating up this summer in Coronado, just a bridge away from downtown San Diego. Visitors with swim towels, beach umbrellas and boogie boards are finding their happy place on the island’s 28 miles of beaches on sparkling San Diego Bay and the Pacific …
Even though the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge won’t be making a stop in San Diego during their three-day whirlwind tour of California, we decided to have some fun with a “Royal-Tea” toast at the California Welcome Center in Alpine (at Viejas Outlet Stores) to formally welcome them to the Golden State.
Visitors were treated to complimentary cups of tea, provided by Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, sweet biscuits (translation: cookies), “tea” shirts and lovely British décor courtesy of the All Things Bright and British shop in La Mesa (8401 La Mesa Blvd.). Seven lucky guests received …
A few months ago I revealed some little known places around the ”Crown City” of Coronado that many folks hadn’t heard of. During a recent media tour I discovered a few more secret and not so obvious spots around the island worth checking out.
Following are my five hidden gems:
- Stare down… The stately Glorietta Bay Inn is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes areas that guests rarely – or never – see. In addition to a basement and sub-basement (how low can you go?), there’s an inconspicuous door leading to a hidden passageway on the first floor. Within the secret alcove a three-story staircase spirals down from

Spring has sprung – in Coronado! The enchanted island is gearing up for one of its most popular events of the year: the 86th Annual Coronado Flower Show, happening this weekend, April 16-17. A Coronado tradition since 1922(!), it’s the largest tented flower show in the West, drawing thousands of flower and gardening enthusiasts – locals and visitors alike – to Spreckels Park (600 block of Orange Ave.).
This year’s theme is “Dig, Design and Dine.” Hundreds of colorful flower exhibits will be displayed inside tents surrounding the park’s central gazebo, which becomes the stage for live …
I thought I knew the “Crown City” of Coronado. I pretty much do – its postcard-perfect beach, charming main street, The Del and iconic bridge. But during a walkabout with Coronado Touring I found a few historic jewels in the island crown that I had never heard of before. Only two of these I haven’t seen (yet). But if you’re lucky, you just might find them all!
- Tubular… The stately Glorietta Bay Inn - former mansion home of sugar baron John D. Spreckels located across the street from the Hotel del Coronado - has a few cool secrets up its historic sleeve. One is

Just a bridge away, Coronado is full of sparkling surprises to put visitors in the holiday spirit and bring some smiles amidst the hustle and bustle of the season. Following are my five fav fun and festive finds from this fantasy island (say that five times fast!):
1. That’s amore! I love the Gondola Company at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, with their blissfully relaxing Venetian gondola rides through the Coronado Cays to view homes and boats festooned with holiday lights. It was pure magic as we glided over the calm bay waters, sipped cocktails and listened to the gondolier singing Christmas …
