We are loving our booth at IMEX this year!

The W San Diego hotel, located in Downtown San Diego, has recently completed a $5 million renovation. Changes included updates to its lounges, signature restaurant, rooftop bar and meeting spaces. The hotel’s new restaurant named Kelvin after the temperature metric and serving Latin-influenced items with locally sourced ingredients, is led by Executive Chef Kevin Harry.
Rooftop bars are becoming synonymous with San Diego and the W’s is not to be missed. Its bar with a bonfire theme and now has a “playful sculpture” of stacked beach chairs and five private cabanas. Additionally, the meeting rooms have all been expanded and renovated. The 258-room property located only a few blocks from the Gaslamp opened in 2002 at 421 West B Street and is operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.

What are you most looking forward to while in San Diego this Summer?
Shhh… can you keep a secret? I almost couldn’t. I’ve known for weeks that postcard-perfect Coronado Beach was going to be crowned America’s Best Beach by “Dr. Beach.” However, I couldn’t tell a soul. I promised coastal expert Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), that mums the word until May 25.
And today’s the day! I’m shouting it from the highest sand dunes on the island that Coronado is the #1 stretch of sand in the United States!
The timing is perfect. Memorial Day weekend is here and AAA ranked San Diego the top Memorial Day destination! The official summer season has begun. Pack the beach towel, sunblock and boogie board and head to the sunny shores of Coronado!
A few fun facts about Coronado Beach:
- The 1.5 mile long beach has a silvery white sheen because of the presence of mica.
- The northernmost section is known as Dog Beach (woof!), where four-legged visitors are permitted off leash!
- The giant sand dunes along Ocean Blvd. spell C-O-R-O-N-A-D-O
If you’re heading to Coronado this summer, I’ve got the inside scoop on a couple more “must-sees” in the area.
The Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition, America’s original surf dog competition, is June 16 at Imperial Beach – just south of Coronado’s Silver Strand. See hounds hang 10 solo (!) or with their owners. Tune in to ABC’s Good Morning America that weekend. Their crew will be filming the whole tail-wagging event with TV star Cameron Mathison!
Visitors are also welcome to join in the fun on the Explore & Restore Silver Strand State Beach interactive nature tours of the beach’s rare plants, animals and birds. Tours depart every Saturday and Sunday morning from the lobby of Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Sign up by calling the Loews concierge at 619-424-4000.
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend everyone and I’ll see you in sun-kissed Coronado!
Maybe it’s the crispy crunch of the golden brown crust. Maybe it’s the warm, fluffy comfort of the soft potato interior. Or maybe it’s that each bite transports you back to a simpler time, when Saturday morning cartoons and the contents of your lunchbox were the only troubles that weighed on your mind. Whatever the reason, the appeal of the charmingly nostalgic tater tot can’t be denied.
Satisfy your inner schoolboy (or girl!) with tasty tots from one of these top 5 San Diego spots (in no particular order):
What’s more All American than a baseball game and a side of tots? Top off a Padres game at PETCO Park with an order of their Lunch Lady Tater Tots, which can be made with sweet potatoes for a twist on the classic tot, or go all in with the Ballpark Tots, topped with chili, cheese, onions and sliced hot dogs.
This comfort food haven has taken the tot to the next level. You’ll find everything from the traditional tot to ones flavored with pickles, jalapeno and cilantro, blue cheese and bacon, or a side of foie gras crème for dipping.
If you like your tots served in elegant bistro ambiance, try Currant American Brasserie located in the Sofia Hotel. Nothing says indulgence like enjoying some garlic and chive tater tots dipped in habanero ketchup or chive buttermilk ranch under the glow of their sparking chandeliers.
Trends collide when tater tots meet the food truck. With a menu featuring childhood favorites like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and grilled cheese, tater tots are a natural fit. Go for the original, or try some topped with cheddar cheese or truffle oil and feta. Their “Tatchos” come layered with grass–fed beef, jalapeños, cheddar cheese and Recess signature sauce.
In a sea of venues trying to out-top each other’s tots, Station Tavern in South Park is a refuge for the tot purist. Their tater tots come served just one way, golden brown and deliciously crispy, seasoned just right with some salt and pepper, and as simple and wonderful as those Saturday morning cartoons.

My nine year-old son is bursting with excitement with the news that LEGOLAND California just unveiled an expanded Star Wars Miniland area. We’ve been to this area so many times I can name all of the scenes, and that’s saying a lot. My personal favorite is the Ewok Village.
Delighted Star Wars fans can expect to see the giant Jawa sandcrawler, featured in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, made up of more than 15,000 LEGO bricks and weighing in at more than 50 pounds. Other new LEGO models being introduced include: the ion cannon in the Rebel base on the planet Hoth; a towering Crystal City building in Christophsis and the giant opee sea killer on Naboo.
In the new LEGO® Star Wars™ Gallery, guests will be further immersed into the Star Wars experience as they walk through and encounter large-scale LEGO minifigures from each episode. Each LEGO model is 3-feet-tall, constructed of approximately 10,000 bricks and displayed on a podium for guests to get an up-close look. The 12 characters feature: Wicket, Princess Leia, R2-D2, Clone Captain Rex, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Yoda and Darth Maul. I think I may have to get my photo with Han Solo!
Be sure to print out your $10 off coupon and tell us what your favorite scene in Miniland is!
