PHOTO NEWS RELEASE
MINI PACHYDERM STANDS TALL
A baby elephant, less than 24 hours old, stands at his full height while surveying the world around him. The youngster, born about 8:30 pm on Monday, April 12th giving the San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park has another reason to celebrate. This is the second elephant born at the Park in 2010 and one more is due in late spring.
The baby elephant, was born to first-time mom, Swazi. Mom and baby are doing well. The newest arrival, which has yet to be named, was born to a herd of elephants that were brought to the Wild Animal Park in 2003 to keep them from being culled in Swaziland due to overpopulation.
The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park is operated by the not-for-profit San Diego Zoo and includes a 900-acre native species reserve. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates millions of individuals a year about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections. The Zoo also manages the San Diego Zoo, and the San Diego Zoos Institute for Conservation Research. The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.
