An Evening With The Animals in San Diego

Summer in San Diego is always fantastic! With it being light out later in the evening we have even more time to go to the beach, jog around Fiesta Island, have a picnic dinner at a park, etc.  Even the major attractions around town get in on the fun by staying open later, featuring new and different shows – and don’t forget the summer fireworks!

Nighttime Zoo – China Celebration

The San Diego Zoo stays open until 9:00 PM each night through September 3rd to allow visitors the chance to discover a different side of the zoo. Not only do you get to see the more than 4,000 animals at a different time of day when their behavior is different, the Zoo also puts on a great evening show.  The Nighttime Zoo – China Celebration includes music and performances all day long – culminating in the Front Street Finale at 8:00 PM near the front entrance.  Acrobats, stiltwalkers, musicians and trampoliners gather together for one ultimate performance that will leave a lasting memory for years to come.

Summer Nights at SeaWorld

SeaWorld San Diego also celebrates Summer Nights with nightly extended hours (until 11:00 PM most of the summer), special evening performances and nightly fireworks shows (at 9:52 PM). They’ve even got Club Atlantis – an all ages dance club Thursday – Sunday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 PM open through August 12th! SeaWorld’s special events happen nightly through August 19th and then on weekends through September 3rd.

Summer Safari

Acrobatic Excitement at the Summer Safari

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park also gets in on the evening excitement with their Summer Safari. Running through August 19th, visitors to the Safari Park have a few extra hours (until 7:00 PM) to hear their favorite lions growl, hyenas’ howl and see their favorite gorillas scowl! Evening entertainment includes African dance and music from Akayaa and Bolga Zohdomah. Guests will also be entertained by African acrobats, exotic bird shows and watching the fastest land mammal on earth try to break its own speed record. Needless to say, an evening at the Safari Park will be filled with excitement!

So take advantage of the extra hours of sunlight, the gorgeous weather and the tons of evening opportunities around town while you can!  Daylight savings won’t be around forever…

About Benjamin Eastman

I lead a pretty active lifestyle and try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. On any given Saturday morning you'll find me on one of San Diego's beach volleyball courts and quite possibly on the water or a hiking trail at some other point during the weekend. As a single professional I definitely enjoy experiencing the nightlife throughout the county - but lean more towards the Gaslamp Quarter, North Park or Hillcrest when planning a night out. I love to eat, and try to keep my ear to the grapevine about new and exciting restaurant openings.  And while I'm certainly excited to try the latest, trendiest restaurant in town, I am also infamously known for late night trips to 24-hour taco shops. Basically, whether I'm in board shorts or a bow tie, I try to enjoy all the many opportunities available to me in San Diego! What would you do on your ideal San Diego day?I’d start with a leisurely, late morning brunch.  Spend some time on the beach.  Grab some rolled tacos at a taco stand and then grab a nap.  In the evening I’d hit the Gaslamp District for dinner and then end the night at a rooftop bar/lounge.If you were invisible, where would you go?If I got to pick a superpower, I don’t know that I would pick invisibility…but if I were to become Mr. Invisible, I guess I would go to all the live music, theater and symphony performances in town. What is your favorite San Diego outdoor activity? On a beautiful, San Diego day there is nothing better than playing beach volleyball.  The sun on your back, a gentle ocean breeze, and a whole lot of bump, set, spiking!  And of course the perfect day of beach volleyball isn't complete without a grill to barbeque some burgers or carne asada on.Do you prefer burgers and beer or linguine and red wine? Both actually!  That’s the beauty of the San Diego food scene.  I CAN have my cake and eat it too!  Depending on my mood (and my finances!) I am happy to chow down at a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood burger joint or a luxury steakhouse. I'm actually a founding member of a Burger lunch group that eats at a different burger restaurant each month.  We've been going for 6 months now and still have plenty of locations to visit before we exhaust all our options!

  1. This sounds like a fun activity with the whole family. It would be interesting to visit a zoo in the the nighttime. Would you recommend bringing kids at that time, or would it be a little scary for them?
