Experiencing Wine Country in Southern California Style

This past weekend, I spent the day in Temecula’s Wine Country.  Temecula is an approximately 45 minute drive from downtown San Diego and boasts a variety of vineyards.  You can pretty much have your pick of types of wines and styles: from larger wineries that feature guided tours, restaurants and spas to small family-run places, where visitors can elbow up to the oak bar to taste a Fume Blanc and Petite Syrah.

My destination for the afternoon was South Coast Winery Resort and Spa. The weather was just right to be outside sipping some great varietals.I do not pretend to be a wine expert, although I certainly enjoy drinking it.  I have lately been on a white wine kick, so I started with their 2009 Pinot Grigio.  My favorite I have to say however was their 2003 Carter Estate Private Reserve Merlot.  The description states it is a blend of blueberries and rose petals mangled with a rich chocolate, coffee earthiness that is warmed with French oak.  All I can tell you was that we really enjoyed it!  Our wine expert Brett was a great source of knowledge and did a great job and made sure we sampled some great wines.

South Coast is a great place to spend the afternoon or stay for the night.  They have a restaurant, wine tasting area, spa and fabulous villas. It’s also really well known for hosting weekend getaways, weddings, and corporate events.  It has something for everyone.

  4. Temecula is a fun place to go wine tasting. You’ll find lots of world class wines. If you want to spend the night, the villas at South Coast Resort are the best accommodations in the area. The rooms are lovely with every amenity you can think of.

  5. I’ve lived in Southern CA for 10 years now, and still have not been to Temecula. My first winery trip was in San Francisco in April 2009. The only other wineries I’ve visited was in Julian. Visiting Temecula is one of the places I will visit before moving away from CA.

  6. South Coast is always on my list of places to wine taste! It is the most relaxing, beautiful and friendliest place to be, always feel welcomed there! Last weekend went to celebrate friends anniversary with dinner in the Vineyard Rose, Daniel our server was EXCELLENT making this an extra special evening as well as the food being phenomenal. I enjoyed the salmon. Can hardly wait to go back.

  10. My husband and I live in Kansas City. Anyone who knows us knows San Diego is our favorite vacation spot. We’ve already made our summer plans to be there in July! We’re not wine experts, but we make excellent tourists! 🙂

  11. Temecula is a very beautiful place to live. We just moved to Temecula, but have yet made time to visit the wineries (just next door, almost). We have been to a few in the past, but more wine tasting is definitely on our to-do-list.

  12. Rose petals with chocolate? Count me in!

I love driving out to Temecula wine country, for San Diego residents it’s a quick trip but once you’re there it feels like a vacation! Sure-fire way to impress out-of-town guests. Pick me! I’ve never been to South Coast Winery.

  13. Hot Lips is my fave! I’m trying to expand my horizons and drink more red, and this would be the perfect way to do that.

  14. I’ve never been to Temecula before but I hear it’s wonderful! Just moved to San Diego this week and can’t wait to explore the entire area, including Temecula Wine Country.

  15. I love taking day trips up to Temecula! I have not visited South Coast Winery yet but have been meaning to. I really enjoy Wilson Creek. They have the cutest restaurant where you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. I have also visited Thorntons, Callaway and Weins. I hope to try more soon =]

  16. Since moving to southern California I’ve been meaning to check out the wineries…thanks for this review and the inspiration to now do it!

  17. Temecula is a great place to spend a weekend. The wineries, Old Town and
the newly renovated mall are fun stops.

  18. As a mother of 5 and a proud San Diego Native, I have visited a couple of the Wineries (Without the kids of course, hahaha) in California and love them all. My husband of 6 months has never been to San Diego and this July we are coming home for a visit (Again, without the kids – hey you got to get some alone time you know ;-D). I would love to be able to show off Temecula to him and this would be a very romantic yet fun way of doing that.

  19. South Coast Winery is my favorite winery in Temecula! We have stayed at the lovely villas and dined at their fabulous restaurant for both brunch and dinner. South Coast Winery is always on my list to take family and guests when they visit!

  20. I’ve been in the area for 6 years and still haven’t made it to Temecula for wine tasting. Hopefully one day!

  22. We’ve been thinking about making a day trip up to Temecula sometime. Winning would certainly give us reason to go!

  23. It’s lovely to see a great review of our own little wine country here in Southern California. Too often we get compared to the Northern California/Northwest growing regions when we have such a unique climate and style all to our own. Would love to see Baja and the Guadalajara Valley wines given the credit they so deserve as well. Will definitely add South Coast to my next tasting tour- thanks!

  24. Sounds like you had a great trip! In my six years in San Diego I somehow managed to NEVER head up to Temecula! Looks like I need to gear up for a trip soon 🙂

  25. Love the Sauvignon Blanc, and the twist off caps. If you have a special occasion the Winemakers Dinners are also exceptional.

  26. Sounds like you had a great trip! In my six years in San Diego I somehow managed to NEVER head up to Temecula! Looks like I need to gear up for a trip soon 🙂
