A love for family and San Diego is baked into every bite at Mya’s Catering Co., a small business that’s beginning to make a big splash around the region. Founder and San Diego native Amaya Ford-Marrs draws inspiration for her delectable cookies and other confections from family tradition and the embrace of a caring community. Now, as Women’s History Month unfolds, we caught up with this unstoppable mom, entrepreneur and youth coach — whose company is a newly inaugurated member of the SDTA’s Tourism Accelerator program — to chat about her favorite San Diego places, her big plans for the business and much more.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to launch your business — as well as why you felt San Diego was the right place to do so.
A: My name is Amaya Ford-Marrs, and I lead a fulfilling life as a wife, mother and businesswoman. I am the proud owner and operator of Mya’s Catering Company, where we specialize in crafting nostalgic desserts infused with love in every bite. Beyond my entrepreneurial pursuits, I find joy in coaching track and field as well as cross country at Morse High School. Additionally, I serve as one of the sprint coaches at Mercury San Diego Youth Track Club.
The inspiration behind launching my business stems from my beloved grandfather and our cherished daughter. Guided by my grandfather’s appreciation for food, family and tradition, I embarked on a journey to create generational wealth for my daughter. Moreover, I aimed to not only share timeless desserts but also to facilitate the bridging of generational gaps within families, fostering the exchange of old memories while forging new ones.
Hailing from Southeast San Diego, I felt compelled to establish my business in this vibrant community. San Diego’s thriving small business ecosystem provided the perfect backdrop, offering not only familial support but also camaraderie among fellow entrepreneurs. ”
Q: What is your recommended must-try item(s) on the Mya’s Catering Company menu?
A: I’d say the must-try items at Mya’s Catering Company are the NyNy’s Chocolate Chip Cookie, our sugar cookie cups and our red velvet cupcakes.
Q: What are a few of your local favorites within your neighborhood?
A: El Real Taco Shop holds a special place in my heart as my all-time favorite taco shop in San Diego. I’ve been a loyal patron since my days at Lincoln High School starting back in 2008. Similarly, Martin Luther King Jr. Park is another cherished spot for me. I’ve been frequenting this park since I was a baby, as my parents have resided nearby for the past 31 years.
Q: If someone were to come to your business, what are a few surrounding things that would be interesting to do?
A: If you’re visiting me at the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market on a Wednesday, I highly recommend exploring the charming neighborhood. Little Italy is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and, of course, delicious Italian cuisine. While you’re there, be sure to wander around the area. From where my booth is situated at the market, on a sunny day, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of San Diego Bay.
On Saturdays, if you’re visiting Mya’s Catering Company at the Cardiff Farmers Market, make sure to stock up on fresh produce and unique handmade crafts. Afterward, treat yourself to some tasty donuts at VG Donuts. Then, head over to Cardiff State Beach to unwind and take in the refreshing ocean breeze and scenic views.
Q: Locally, where do you go to connect with your heritage?
A: I enjoy immersing myself in my heritage within the Black Arts & Culture District, formerly known as Southeast San Diego. A place I frequently visit is the Jacobs Center, where I proudly serve as a Diamond Community Investor, a commitment I’ve held since childhood. Living not far from this area and having attended Lincoln High School from 2008 to 2012, it’s to stay connected to my roots and neighborhood. Whether I’m grocery shopping, grabbing coffee or simply hanging out, being in this area allows me to maintain that connection.
Q: What are your favorite San Diego businesses or cultural or neighborhood sites and events?
A: I have several favorite events and activities in San Diego that I absolutely adore. First and foremost, I always look forward to attending the Juneteenth events held throughout the city, as they hold great cultural significance for me. Additionally, as I’m a self-proclaimed foodie, San Diego Restaurant Week never fails to excite me, bringing a burst of joy to my heart with its culinary delights.
Another cherished pastime is strolling around Seaport Village with my husband and daughter, relishing the opportunity to unwind and indulge in a bit of people-watching. Exploring new culinary experiences in North Park and Hillcrest is another favorite activity for my husband and me.
We also have a soft spot for La Jolla — we’re captivated by its stunning mansions and picturesque beach views. And of course, spending quality time with our daughter at Mission Beach, soaking in the sun and enjoying the sand, is always a highlight.
Q: If someone were coming to San Diego for the first time, what would you tell them to do? (Besides visit your business, of course!)
A: I would recommend starting your day bright and early by visiting Mission Beach first. The sunrise view there is simply breathtaking, especially during a peaceful morning stroll along the coastline, passing by all the charming beach houses. After enjoying the sunrise, I suggest heading to Great Maple in North Park for a delightful brunch experience.
Q: What do you think would most surprise a newcomer to San Diego?
A: Visitors are often pleasantly surprised by the laid-back and welcoming nature of San Diego residents. The relaxed atmosphere and the friendliness of the locals contribute to the city’s charm. Additionally, newcomers are often amazed by the abundance of activities and the unique character that San Diego offers. From its diverse neighborhoods to its array of attractions, San Diego never fails to impress with its distinctiveness and endless opportunities for exploration.

I aspire to be a cherished gem in the vibrant fabric of San Diego, fostering connections and spreading joy through my culinary endeavors.
