National Dessert Day in San Diego: All Desserts, All the Time

Extraordinary Desserts San Diego

Life in San Diego is sweet, and not just because of the great weather. When it comes to sweet treats, San Diego calls with cupcake shops, pie joints, and some of the best ice cream in the country (just ask the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine).

In fact, San Diego loves desserts so much, we have several restaurants that specialize in just that. Today you can celebrate National Dessert Day in San Diego, but you don’t need an excuse to indulge in the delicious treats from these dessert-first restaurants.

Pastry is art at Extraordinary Desserts

Extraordinary Desserts has been a beloved spot for decadent desserts for more than 20 years. Chef/owner Karen Krasne trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and has become famous for towering flower- and fruit-topped confections that incorporate everything from rich chocolate ganache to passion fruit crème. Head to their locations in San Diego’s Little Italy and neighboring Banker’s Hill to try an elegant tart, slice of sinful cake or indulgent pot de crème.

Celebrate National Cupcake Day in La Jolla

Today is National Cupcake Day, and if you need help deciding where to celebrate, San Diego’s seaside village of La Jolla is the perfect stop. From traditional favorites to organic and unusual flavor combos, cupcake lovers won’t be disappointed with either of these tasty options.

Delicious Sprinkles' Red Tower of Cupcakes

One of the national’s most beloved cupcake chains, Sprinkles Cupcakes, opened up shop this year in La Jolla to the delight of locals and visitor alike. Their classic cupcakes are hard to beat, with flavors like traditional red velvet and delicious vanilla and chocolate combos. For the holidays, you’ll find special flavors like eggnog spice and chocolate peppermint. And with their holiday toy drive, your cupcake indulgence can spread a little holiday cheer – through December 21, bring in any new, unwrapped toy and you’ll receive a free cupcake! All toys will be donated to Ronald McDonald House charities.

Cupcakes by Chris Jones

For organic cupcakes, La Jolla’s Cups offers up unusual flavors that will surprise even the most jaded cupcake afficianado. The Arancia features a blood orange cake topped with blood orange buttercream. Cheese makes an unexpectedly delicious frosting for The Fig Leap, a fig cupcake with goat cheese frosting, and the Wine & Cheese, a cabernet-chocolate cake with brie frosting.

Which of your favorite cupcake shops will you visit on National Cupcake Day?

San Diego: Craft Beer Paradise

There’s no doubt about it – San Diego is a beer lovers paradise! With more than 35 local breweries, our city has more craft brewers than any other city in the country. Join me on a video tour of my favorite places to sample the best beer that San Diego has to offer.

5 to Try: Beer+Food = Beerfood

If you haven’t heard, San Diego brewers are pretty much kicking Heineken these days in the craft beer scene as they continue to pump out award-winning brews and take home coveted titles like “World’s Best.” Our beer is so tasty, that local restaurants and brewpubs have joined in on the fun and are rounding out their menus with beer-infused foods to compliment our sophisticated beer palates.

Some of my beerfood favorites include:

  1. Hamilton’s Tavern in South Park – the oldest beer and wine licensed establishment in San Diego serving tasty pub food with a twist because almost every menu item is made with beer! Highlights include Hop Sausages (house-made sausages, made with hop leaves), Beer Cheese Soup, Beer Candy and beer marinated chicken wings.
  2. Karl Strauss, multiple locations in San Diego – the largest craft brewery in the county offering a core lineup of beers, plus a variety of specialty seasonal beers.  Beer food items include Lemon Hef Chicken, Beer Brined Pork Chops, Big Beer Burger, Beer Battered Fish and Chips and my personal favorite, a Beer Float made with vanilla bean ice cream, dark chocolate and Red Trolley Ale.
