Tinier than teeny? More micro than micro?
Nano, that’s what. And San Diego’s craft beer scene is bursting with the newest trend in the brewing biz, nanobreweries.
My go-to beer guru, Summer at Brew Hop just hipped me to this. It’s all about small batch brewing and several new spots have cropped up in town lately:
- Just two weeks ago, Hess Brewing opened near Miramar with a tasting room sampling their diverse beers that range in style from Claritas (a light, refreshing Kolsch) to Intrepidus (a bitter, hoppy San Diego-style IPA) to Ex Umbris (a rich, dark Imperial Stout). The tasting room is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 -7 p.m., Thursdays from 2-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m.
- Mother Earth Brew Company opened at the beginning of this year up in Vista with eight taps pouring their brews like Primordial Imperial IPA (an aggressively hopped brew true to the signature San Diego-style), Auld Knucker IPA (a more drinkable, session IPA) and Siren Blonde Ale (a light, malty beer made with a touch of honey). The tasting room is open Thursday and Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon-5 p.m.
- Also coming soon to Vista will be Iron Fist Brewing Company. Slated to open next month, this family run brewery will be the newest nanobrewer on the scene. Can’t wait to see what they unleash on us!
As always, a huge thanks to Summer at Brew Hop for keeping us in the loop on what’s new in San Diego beers. Whether you’re a hop head or a craft brew newbie, when you visit San Diego, I highly recommend her brewery tours.
We’ve told you about them before once or twice – they are awesome!
