San Diego Beer Week Returns – November 2-11, 2012

San Diego Beer Week is a countywide celebration of the amazing local craft beer culture. Over the course of 10 days, SDBW offers craft beer lovers the chance to sample award winning regional beers (San Diego breweries took home 15 medals from the 2012 Great American Beer Festival!) at over 250 different events including festivals, tap take overs, beer brunches, brewery tours, pint nights, beer releases, cask nights, beer dinners, brewer meet and greets, education sessions and more.

While picking an event to attend each day and/or night can be a difficult decision, after the break are two events you don’t want to miss!

Mangia, Mangia! World Pasta Day in San Diego!

My love for Italian food started early since I come from an Irish-Italian family and most of our dinners growing up either consisted of meat and potatoes or pasta. Today, my pantry always has a few boxes of pasta ready for the impromptu dinner or a date night at home with what I call Shalene’s Pesto Pasta (comment below if you want the recipe). However, sometimes my wife and I don’t feel like cooking and instead head on out for a delicious plate of pasta…made by someone else. 🙂

Since today is World Pasta Day, I wanted to share my three go to San Diego Italian restaurants for some pasta whether it be a romantic dinner, a family night out or a quick grab to eat while on the go.

Hanging Out at San Diego’s Tide Pools

Mild ocean breezes and rolling waves are always in season at San Diego beaches. In the fall, the weather is still warm enough to hit the surf, and even better, a great time to discover the secret world of tide pools. There’s no telling what tiny creatures you’ll encounter in these incredible little ecosystems teeming with life along San Diego’s shoreline. It all happens when the tide rolls out – shallow pools form around the rocks and become a home to tiny octopuses, colorful sea stars, hardy Hermit crabs and other remarkable critters. And that’s just what’s visible to the naked eye.

When my own kids were very young, exploring the tide pools was one of our favorite weekend adventures. Their favorite discoveries: The slimy looking sea cucumbers and prickly sea urchins. Now teenagers, they still love to go, so this activity is good for nature-lovers of all ages.

Fall kicks-off the best viewing season and runs through winter. Before you visit, check the surf report to make sure it’s low or minus tide, so the tide pools are out in the open. After the break are a few suggestions to get you started.

7 Pier Fishing Spots in San Diego

Scrape away the years and years of fishing experiences from most old salts and you’ll probably find a pier or barge fisherman under all those tales of whoppers and the ones that got away.

Pier fishing is how many fishermen started out. It’s a blue-collar way to enjoy the sport. Anglers don’t need a fishing license to fish a public pier, so there’s that, but it’s also a great place to take kids because there’s always something for them to do.

San Diego is blessed with some of the best fishing piers in the state, including two that are nearly 2,000 feet long.

San Diego may be a laid-back town, but we take our food very seriously. With a diverse landscape and mild temperatures, San Diego County boasts ideal conditions for farming, so it’s no surprise that the county is home to more than 6,000 small and family-owned farms. These farmers provide chefs from local restaurants with access to the freshest possible ingredients, but you don’t have to pull up a seat at a restaurant to enjoy some of San Diego’s local bounty.

San Diego is home to dozens of vibrant neighborhoods, each with its own style and flair, and it’s in these neighborhoods that you’ll often find San Diego’s best hidden treasures.

Though the neighborhood may once have been home to San Diego’s flourishing tuna fishing industry, today’s Little Italy is a lively and design-conscious neighborhood filled with patio cafes, restaurants, pubs, art galleries and some of the city’s most stylish shops.

Happy 25th Anniversary to Café Sevilla in San Diego!

25 years after putting down roots in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, Café Sevilla still pleases patrons with a vast selection of authentic Spanish tapas and the longest running Flamenco Dinner show in Southern California.

Stop in for famous sangria and tapas at the ever-popular happy hour – held every day from opening until 7:00 PM, or treat yourself to a Flamenco Dinner Show.
