San Diego’s weather may not call for seasonal snowfall, but thanks to some of our main attractions, everyone can enjoy a white wonderland this holiday season. From the world’s largest LEGO Christmas tree to a zoo filled with almost as many light up animals as it has real ones, a trip to San Diego’s attractions is sure to make your spirits bright.
While lights wrapped around palm trees are much more common than snowmen with carrots for noses, San Diego gets into the winter spirit with a twist. Just throw on a pair of jeans and grab a light jacket before you and your loved one(s) head out for some outdoor ice skating under the warm San Diego sky.

Mild ocean breezes and rolling waves are always in season at San Diego beaches. In the fall, the weather is still warm enough to hit the surf, and even better, a great time to discover the secret world of tide pools. There’s no telling what tiny creatures you’ll encounter in these incredible little ecosystems teeming with life along San Diego’s shoreline. It all happens when the tide rolls out – shallow pools form around the rocks and become a home to tiny octopuses, colorful sea stars, hardy Hermit crabs and other remarkable critters. And that’s just what’s visible to the naked eye.
When my own kids were very young, exploring the tide pools was one of our favorite weekend adventures. Their favorite discoveries: The slimy looking sea cucumbers and prickly sea urchins. Now teenagers, they still love to go, so this activity is good for nature-lovers of all ages.
Fall kicks-off the best viewing season and runs through winter. Before you visit, check the surf report to make sure it’s low or minus tide, so the tide pools are out in the open. After the break are a few suggestions to get you started.

Scrape away the years and years of fishing experiences from most old salts and you’ll probably find a pier or barge fisherman under all those tales of whoppers and the ones that got away.
Pier fishing is how many fishermen started out. It’s a blue-collar way to enjoy the sport. Anglers don’t need a fishing license to fish a public pier, so there’s that, but it’s also a great place to take kids because there’s always something for them to do.
San Diego is blessed with some of the best fishing piers in the state, including two that are nearly 2,000 feet long.
Visitors and locals alike are gearing up for a San Diego tradition as “American as apple pie” – Julian Apple Days, happening this weekend October 6-7!
San Diego is the perfect place to make your Southern California homebase during a fall vacation. You can enjoy great local attractions including the beach, SeaWorld and LEGOLAND for the majority of your visit and then take a quick day trip or two to the mountains for some skiing/snowboarding, Joshua Tree National Park for some hiking or Disneyland for some holiday family fun.
