Somethings Afoot at this Dinner in San Diego

The Dinner Detective

Want to be Sherlock Holmes for a night? We’re giving away four (4) tickets to The Dinner Detective in Downtown San Diego. Leave a comment on this blog post by noon P.S.T. on Friday, December 9, 2011 for a chance to win!

The Dinner Detective

As my wife and I entered the hotel lobby, we sensed that something was afoul. We chatted with the other guests (some of whom seemed a little odd) while waiting for the dining room to open. Things took a turn for the worst when right in the middle of dinner, someone was murdered!

While enjoying a delicious four-course meal, we took part in the entertaining interactive murder mystery show of “Who Dunnit?” put on by The Dinner Detective. Everyone is a suspect at the table, and the objective of the evening (besides enjoying the great meal), is to guess who the guilty party is. Clues are slowly revealed as you move from course-to-course, and it is up to you to guess who the 2 actors at the table are. Pay close attention because at the end of the night you must submit your best guess on who is the murderer. If you are the top sleuth, you could win a tantalizing prize package (my wife actually won the prize!).

Dinner Detective shows are offered multiple times a month at the Courtyard Marriott in Downtown San Diego. And starting on December 17, 2011, it will also be offered at the California Center for The Arts in North County.

You can even up the ante by surprising your loved one as they become part of the show with the Gift, Celebration and Romance packages. Those looking for something a little different during the holidays or New Year’s Eve can book a spot during one of the special shows during December.

This is a dinner you will never forget…if you make it out alive!

San Diego’s Passion for Fashion: THREAD

New York, Los Angeles and…San Diego? Yup, you can add America’s Finest City to the list of top fashion destinations thanks to THREAD. The multi-city shopping event promoting emerging designers and artists comes to San Diego this Sunday, Oct. 9 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Horton Event Space in Horton Plaza shopping center. Those who know me know that I have been known to lose all sense of budgetary wisdom when it comes to fashion, so I can’t wait to stock up on clothing and accessories from our many talented local designers that will be showcasing their wares. And the best part is that in addition to the lively party atmosphere that makes the event so fun, the designers participating will be offering below retail pricing.

So much more than just a fashion trunk show, THREAD includes a slew of activities to keep you entertained all afternoon, including live music, a pop-up local art gallery, the Style Lounge, manicure and pedicure station, a photo booth, live screen printing stations, a special “man cave” for the guys and so much more. Plus, designers will be offering a variety of giveaways all day long.

Interested in attending THREAD? We’re giving away 3 sets of tickets for you and a guest to enjoy the celebration of all things fabulous this Sunday. Just leave a comment on this post before 10:00 am on Wednesday, Oct. 5 to be entered to win, and we’ll select three winners at random to receive THREAD tickets for you and a guest. Magic in the Gaslamp

Magic Lounge

Magic Returns to Downtown!

For years, it was known as one of the happening spots. Every week, people from all over San Diego would pack The Magic Lounge – a cool, magic themed bar where employees would pull double duty as bartenders and magicians. Eventually the place shut down but now, that same core group of magicians who performed some thirty years ago at the Magic Lounge, are back. This time, they’re entertaining crowds at the new Magic Lounge at the On Broadway in the Gaslamp Quarter.

According to Magician Terry Lunceford, the deal was in the works for months and finally came to fruition in January. The magic shows are held at 8:00 pm on the first Friday of the month and feature local magicians Mike Stilwell, Joe Mystic, Terry Lunceford and other guest performers. It’s a nice mix of close-up magic and a stand-up show. “Performing in San Diego is absolutely amazing. Every day, I get up and think about how I get to do magic. It’s an awesome feeling,” Lunceford said.

Although the show is relatively new, it’s definitely gaining momentum. “It was standing room only at our last show,” Lunceford said. David Pease has seen the show twice and says he can’t wait to go back. “It’s a wonderful break from reality. The show is fresh and always changing. It’s top notch entertainment for only ten dollars per person,” Pease said.

One tip – if you want a good seat, come at six when the doors open because it does fill up fast.

Mini Thread Show and Escada Spring 2011 Fashion Show

When it comes to fashion, San Diego is known mainly for a relaxed sort of coolness factor. The looks vary from sporty-chic to downtown-diva to boho-chic to urban vibe depending on the activity you choose. We feature many unique shopping opportunities right here in our own backyard. With the THREAD Show, heading our way on Sunday, April 3, at Horton Plaza from noon – 6:00 pm, San Diego will once again be showcasing 100 of the best independent designers alongside music, art, food and a fashion show.

In March, I had the opportunity to attend a similar event sponsored by NBC at the W Hotel.  The evening featured a mini THREAD Show with participating local artisans for fashion and art. San Diego is known to be eco-savvy and many of the jewelry and clothing designs are from recycled products like upcycled record vinyl for jewelry and vintage fashions that have been re-designed  for an updated current look of today.

Recently I also enjoyed the Escada Spring 2011 Fashion Show held at Neiman Marcus showcasing  some great looks for the women of San Diego.  The Spring trend for San Diego is lots of color, white, and lightweight fabrics.  For our casual vibe the trend is floaty maxi dresses and long skirts to create that elegant BoHo-Chic look.  The business look featured more lightweight structured skirts with feminine blouses and straight cut pants with lots of jackets.  Shoes ranged from elegant sandals to fierce heels.  The choice is yours but your shoes need to make a statement!
