The Japanese Friendship Garden provides a place of peace and contemplation in a familiar environment. There is a tremendous amount of thought behind creating and maintaining a venue of such simplicity. It is a deceptively secluded area of Balboa Park, with very little outside noise allowed in. In fact, it wasn’t until I left the garden that I was reminded of outside noises such as children and passing cars. There was a real feeling of back-to-the-real-world.
What is it about dolphins and other sea creatures that make us want to get in the water with them and give them love? Whatever it is, San Diego is fortunate to have a place where we can scratch that itch. When Sea World’s Happy Harbor reopened as Sesame Street Bay of Play, it was so much more than before. Sea World’s children’s play area had been transformed into an amusement park all its own within the marine park.
