San Diego is full of rich history. In fact, the history of California began in San Diego when explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay under the Spanish flag and was the first European to discover California. The historic Cabrillo National Monument celebrates a major anniversary this year, but isn’t the only other site in San Diego celebrating an anniversary in 2013. Several of San Diego iconic hotels, museums and attractions mark milestones this year.
Hillcrest Neighborhood Spotlight – Home of San Diego’s LGBT community
San Diego’s uptown neighborhood of Hillcrest, home of San Diego’s LGBT community, celebrates diversity year-round with a vibrant rainbow mix of accommodations, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, chic boutiques, vintage clothing stores, kitschy novelty shops and so much more.
With San Diego Pride coming up next month (July 12-14), now is the perfect time to spotlight a few of my favorite places worth checking out…
Golf for Beginners: Maderas Golf Academy
In San Diego, there are a few sports everyone should try. Surfing is one, and after living in San Diego for many years, I finally tried getting up on a board last year. Golf is another – after all, San Diego is home to more than 90 golf courses. When Maderas Golf Club was recently named one of the top 100 best public courses in the U.S. by GolfDigest, I knew it was time to give it a shot…even if my shot ended up in the sand.
Baja-Med Cuisine in South Bay San Diego
South Bay San Diego, located south of downtown San Diego and north of the US/Mexico border, is a cross-border hotspot for the most authentic Mexican and Baja-Med cuisines. TV personalities Andrew Zimmerman and Anthony Bourdain have already lauded the San Diego/Tijuana region’s culinary excellence, and South Bay provides the perfect opportunity for those looking to try the best of the Baja-Med craze without the need of a passport or border waits. Check below for some of the local favorites.
Swimsuit Shopping – Getting Ready for Summer with San Diego Style
If you’ve been anywhere other than sunny San Diego for the last few months, chances are you’re ready to hit the beach (and hey, even us locals are itching to get summer started). But what if you made it all the way to San Diego’s shores only to discover that you forgot to pack your swimsuit?
Fear not! Whether you need to shop after some forgetful packing or simply want to look like you blend in with the locals, San Diego shops offer some hot summer styles that are sure to make you look like a lifelong beach babe.
Vintage Finds and Timeless Dining in San Diego’s Mission Valley
Does your weekly viewing of Mad Men leave you longing for those golden days of three-martini lunches and flawlessly coifed hair? Do you scour vintage shops for the perfect pair of wingtips? Then hop in your ’67 Cadillac and drive down to San Diego’s Mission Valley, where you don’t need a time machine to travel back to the 1960s.
There’s no faux-vintage here – this is the real deal! Some of San Diego’s most timeless dinner joints are tucked unassumingly into the narrow enclave just off the freeway, waiting to be discovered by savvy visitors. Better bring your appetite for a good steak along with a good time, because classic dining is what Mission Valley does best.
5 of San Diego’s Best Scenic Waterfront Walks
Whether it’s sunrise, sunset or high noon, there is nothing like a leisurely stroll along one of these scenic waterfront walks in San Diego.
Each of these treks can be as easy as you want it to be, modified to a distance that works for you. Wear the right shoes, carry plenty of drinking water, use sunscreen and wear sunglasses. Take along a camera and enjoy the outdoors while being good to your body.

Museums to Marathons – Working Out in Balboa Park
In addition to Balboa Park’s 15 museums, theatres, gardens, fountains and fine dining; the 1,200 acre oasis also provides locals and visitors a great place to work up a sweat and exercise.
Throughout the year there are plenty of organized 5k runs (Thanksgiving Day Run is my favorite) and walks in the park, but these workout options are available anytime you’re ready to get up and go.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road…The Wizard of Oz and Coronado!
On the heels of today’s premiere of the new Disney movie “Oz The Great & Powerful,” I thought it might be fun to spotlight Coronado’s remarkable link to author L. Frank Baum and his famous Wizard of Oz book series
