Robert Arends presents his first Essential Summer Guide to Coronado, a lowdown on what’s hot and what’s new on the island, as well as some incredible lesser-known sights that are sure to delight visitors this summer.
Shhh… can you keep a secret? I almost couldn’t. I’ve known for weeks that postcard-perfect Coronado Beach was going to be crowned America’s Best Beach by “Dr. Beach.” However, I couldn’t tell a soul. I promised coastal expert Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), that mums the word until May 25.
And today’s the day! I’m shouting it from the highest sand dunes on the island that Coronado is the #1 stretch of sand in the United States!
If San Diego is known for one thing, it would be for our gorgeous beaches. And Trip Advisor agrees! San Diego was included in their list of top 10 Beach Destinations in the U.S. With 70 miles of pristine coastline and legendary weather, you can enjoy the surf and sand almost any day of the year.

One of my favorite activities to do with the kids is exploring San Diego’s many tide pools. They love seeing what might be hiding between the rocks. The best time to see these little creatures are from late fall through early spring as low daytime tides reveal wider beaches and pools teeming with native marine life such as hermit crabs, sea hares and sea anemones. Check the surf report to make sure the tide is low, a 1.0 foot tide or lower is Ok, but you will have a better chance of seeing more marine plants and animals when the tide is minus. Below is a list of my top spots for tide pools in San Diego.

Emphasis of this blog post title should be on the “Is” because this is not much of a surprise to those who have been to the beaches of La Jolla. Sunset Magazine recently rated La Jolla as the 2nd best beach getaway. Here is what they had to say: Anyone ready to try stand-up paddleboarding […]
