If you dislike large, fantastically dressed crowds, or are a supervillain wishing to avoid any run-ins with the superhero community, you would be wise to stay away from downtown San Diego this weekend! Comic-Con 2009 has long been sold out — not to keep rubbing it in — but the Gaslamp Quarter is still the place to be this weekend, if only to get in some of the best people watching of the year. Sitting out on the patio of any restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter gives you ringside seats to a true San Diego spectacle as our most colorful conventioneers fill the streets.
Oh, no. She didn’t!
Yes, I did. I went and got my undead on at last night’s Comic-Con Zombie Walk through the Gaslamp Quarter. You can see me lurch by at about 1:07. A few choice snaps after the jump…
Comic-Con No Tickets Required
The biggest pop culture extravaganza in the nation is upon us once again. Last year, I had tickets. So, in addition to walking the floor, some incredible celeb-sightings and crazy people-watching, I took in a panel honoring Ralph Bakshi, genius writer/director of the revolutionary Fritz the Cat, and a spirited session on all things steampunk. (Best. Costumes. Ever.) […]
Street Scene Has Whatcha Want…Whatcha Want
*UPDATE: 7/20 – Really sad news, MCA’s cancer diagnosis . Hope he recovers completely and soon. Naturally, this health crisis has forced the cancellation of the Beastie Boys’ Street Scene appearance as well as the rest of their tour and new album.* Namely the Beastie Boys, MIA, Conor Oberst, Of Montreal, Band of Horses, Girl Talk, Chromeo, […]
Hotel Indigo Debuts Downtown
Shake off the last of the construction dust, it’s time to put out the welcome mat! The Hotel Indigo San Diego opens for business today in the East Village neighborhood downtown. Set just a block east of the Padres’ home at PETCO Park, the hotel is San Diego’s first LEED certified hotel – one of only 19 in the country. […]
Happy Hour Takes You Higher
Ahh, Friday in July. The weather is gorgeous. Are you looking forward to the weekend? With sunshine like this, there’s no way you should consider kicking it off indoors. Naturally, there are lots of outdoor cocktails to be had in San Diego but, I’d suggest reaching for the sky and heading for the roof. Yes, you should beat […]
Military Monuments Eternally Entertained
The new memorial at Tuna Harbor Park, “A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military,” is the crowning piece in the Port of San Diego Public Art program’s Greatest Generation Collection, which is a series of art pieces and memorials honoring people, events and military heritage from World War II to present day. Bob Hope’s presence in the collection is fitting since that is just about the same span of time that he entertained U.S. troops overseas.
All That Jazz (& Blues) In San Diego
I’m a believer in letting the music speak for itself, so I’ll try not to go on too long. Let me just point you in the right direction. Here are some swingin’ venues I’ve tried.
Ahoy, Matey! It’s Sailor Days
Did you ever want to be a sailor? Well, beginning July 15, you’ll get your chance because Wednesdays are Sailor Days this summer at the Maritime Museum on San Diego Bay. Every Wednesday through August 26, the historic Star of India and all the other ships in the museum’s collection will offer hands-on activities designed to […]
Happy Hour is Tiki Time
I’m having a Calgon moment and a bubble bath won’t cut it. I need something stronger. What’s a girl to do when only a technicolor cocktail with an umbrella will suffice? Follow the lead of generations of Californians and embrace Tiki culture, of course. That way, I can take an exotic getaway – just for a happy hour […]
